Mr Nicholas Lee was proud to host the Sheffield Maxillofacial Orbital-Zygomatic Trauma Course on 10th April 2025 at the School of Clinical Dentistry, University of Sheffield. This one-day event brought together clinicians with a shared interest in trauma surgery to learn, collaborate, and refine practical surgical techniques in the management of orbital and zygomatic fractures.
The course was enriched by a fantastic faculty line-up. Mr Lee was joined by Mr Mathew Thomas, Mr Ibraz Siddique, and Mr Yasser Safdar, who delivered a series of engaging lectures on orbital anatomy, injury assessment, surgical access, and post-traumatic reconstruction. The day also included discussions on patient-specific planning and navigation-assisted surgery, reflecting the evolving interface between surgical technique and digital technology.
The afternoon featured a zygomatic osteotomy workshop with patient-specific cutting guides and custom plates—a highlight for many attendees. These hands-on sessions allowed participants to explore practical techniques in real-world scenarios, with faculty on hand to guide and support. The energy and enthusiasm in the room spoke volumes about the appetite for focused, experience-led training in trauma reconstruction.
A special thank you goes to Mr Conor Sheridan, Sales Specialist CMF at DePuy Synthes, whose support and technical insight into the planning and production of patient-specific implants (PSIs) added real depth to the course. Collaborations like these are essential to the future of innovation in facial trauma surgery.
Events like this reaffirm the value of shared learning and collaborative expertise. Mr Lee extends his sincere thanks to the faculty, participants, and industry partners who made the course a success. As the field of maxillofacial trauma surgery continues to evolve, opportunities for hands-on, practical training will be more important than ever.
Mr. Nicholas Lee was privileged to attend the 16th Asian Congress on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ACOMS) in Chennai, India. The event, held from July 25 to July 27, 2024, was more than just another conference—it was a gathering of some of the brightest minds in the field, coming together to push the boundaries of what’s possible in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Sharing a Decade of Expertise with PEEK Implants
Mr Lee was honoured to give a keynote presentation titled “A Decade of Patient-Specific PEEK Implants: From In-House Design and Manufacturing to Virtual Planning and Off-Site Production.”
Mr. Lee delved into over a decade of experience with PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone) patient-specific facial implants in his presentation. The discussion highlighted how these custom solutions have revolutionised facial reconstructive surgery by enhancing surgical precision and patient outcomes. The evolution from in-house design to advanced virtual planning and off-site production was a focal point, showcasing the transformative impact of technology on patient care.

Mr Lee had the immense privilege of returning to Materialise Malaysia. Five years seems a short time but in between we had the global pandemic but still find an enthusiastic workforce and what expansion. This visit wasn’t just a mere walkthrough; it was an intellectual feast that stimulated minds and sparked innovative conversations.
Sharing Insights on Patient-Specific Guides and Implants. Mr Lee was honoured to give a talk on the role of patient-specific guides and implants in facial deformity surgery. The discussion revolved around how these custom solutions enhance surgical precision and improve patient outcomes.
Engaging in a Focus Group with Clinical & Design Engineers. The highlight of the visit was undoubtedly the focus group session with clinical engineers. We delved deep into the intricacies of zygomatic osteotomies and genioplasties, comparing the nuances of plastic versus metal designs and debating the merits of onlay techniques versus expansion or advancement strategies. The exchange of ideas was both enlightening and refreshing. We also explored the diverse features and variations in splint designs, contrasting them with clinical practices to uncover areas for innovation and improvement. The conversation extended to guided Le Fort single-piece and segmental procedures, discussing the clinical requirements versus the digital approach to these complex surgeries.
A Fusion of Clinical Expertise and Digital Innovation. This visit to Materialise was more than just an academic endeavour; it was a confluence of clinical expertise and digital innovation. Engaging with professionals who are at the forefront of technological advancements in surgery was both humbling and inspiring.
